Friday, February 10, 2023 — The crowd at the House of Blues, Boston oozed with an energy for Samia before she even stepped on stage. Preforming her new album, Honey, her sticky lyrics resinate with her dedicated followers. As she came on stage, the crowd’s roar reverberated through the walls: a physical manifestation of excitement between her and the crowd.
Her lively presence is reminiscent of the genuine curiosity and bliss during childhood; she dances through the music, pulling the the air with intense emotion. The response from the room fuels the movement, a refreshing feeling at a show and a connection many of us seek when attending live events. Early in the set, she urges her drummer to preform a tune as she dances, embodying a personal cheerleader. That’s how it feels when watching Samia, cheering for the ultimate star.
Coinciding with her excitement, her authenticity only builds. She is transparent. Between songs, she opens up to the crowd, “I can’t hear you guys, but in my head I’m imagining you saying, ‘you got this! It’s okay to be nervous! You look great!" Pure awe overtook her from the moment she stepped on stage.
This sweet authenticity is reminiscent of her newest album. She demands to be heard through angelic lyrics. It can be difficult to portray darker subjects in a colorful light, but Samia does not stray away from glazing her lyrics with a semi-sweet coating.
Her fans have adorned her from day one. I have been lucky enough to cover her show in Boston back on October 2, 2021 in Brighton Music Hall. No matter the size of the venue, she gives her all to the audience, falling into the music. Dancing, jumping, and twirling since Brighton, she remains just as energetic on this upgraded stage. Her growth in less than two years is truly inspiring.
A compelling aspect of storytelling and performance is offering the fans a more intimate glance into the performer's life: though music is immensely powerful, fans still seek to get closer to the artists. Hearing stories behind lyrics, or anecdotes between songs, that personal connection is vital. Samia could benefit from talking more with the room because their response to the few moments of vulnerability was moving.
However, she and her team do take the time to repost fan's Instagram stories, posts, and videos onto her personal story each night after a show: a rarity in the realm of entertainers.
Watching her preform will guarantee you leave smiling on your way home. The energy stays with you, sticking to the bottom of your shoes as you make your way to the T, and in your hair while you shower; humming and dancing like your star, Samia. Remember, it’s all honey if Samia says it is.
